Acai Berry vs. Blueberry
In today’s matchup, we compare the best acai berry vs. the best blueberry you can find. Which one is better for you? Which has the best heath benefits? Which should you buy?
The answer, of course, is that it depends on what you want. Here is a little bit more about that:
The blueberry is a delicious small berry about the size of a marble. At first, blueberries are pale green, then reddish-purple, and then blue upon being fully ripe. You can find blueberries in North America especially, or in Europe, where their close relative is named the bilberry. The main species of blueberry sold today in North America is the Northern Highbush Blueberry. These blueberries are aptly named because of their blueish color and juice.
Though there are only a makers of pure blueberry juice on the market today, blueberry juice is used as a component in many health drinks. Blueberries taste great on cereal, in yogurt, with ice cream, or as a healthy, sweet snack!
Researchers have shown that blueberry has tremendous anti-oxidant presence. According to the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry and the Molecular Nutrition Group, the blue berry has anthocyanin and flavonol which inhibit workings of cancer cell development and inflammation. Resveratol, a powerful phytochemical, is often found in high levels amidst the skin of some blueberry species.
At the 2nd International Symposium on Berry Health Benefits in Corvallis, Oregon, there were reports which showed that the consumption of blueberries (and similar berry fruits including cranberries) may alleviate the decline of mental faculties occurring in some aging conditions and in Alzheimer's disease.
Feeding blueberries to animals has been shown to lower brain damage in an induced stroke, and the Marucci Center for Blueberry and Cranberry Research at Rutgers has research to suggest that blueberries may help prevent urinary tract infections.
Such a great line of health benefits from the blue berry! If you are in the supermarket or at a farmers market, or any place where the blueberry might be, DEFINITELY consider buying some. They are some of the healthiest berries you can eat, especially due to their color (always eat a variety of colored fruits and vegetables!)
Which has more antioxidants? The best blueberry or the best acai Berry?
A recent report in October 2006 of Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry showed one study which investigated this. The study used an oxygen radical absorbance capacity or ORAC test on a freeze-dried açaí powder. Researchers found that the powder showed a high antioxidant effect against some kinds of free radicals, approximately 10% more than lowbush blueberry or cranberry on a dry weight basis.
In other words, the acai berry beat out the blueberry in ORAC value, which is a main component of antioxidant analyses. Keep in mind, though, that this study did not consider the fruits raw or as puree. It also only considered a limited number of free radicals.
Generally speaking, though, there is no “winner” in this contest of the acai berry vs. blueberry. Right now, fresh blueberries are easiest to obtain and less expensive. They taste great and are extremely healthy for you.
The acai berry also tastes great and is extremely healthy for you. Do yourself a favor and don’t buy the freeze dried powder. Buy 100% natural, certified organic acai berry puree, and taste the difference.
Don’t be fooled by imitators, though. Don't buy something because it says "blueberry" on it. Don’t buy something just because it says “acai” on it. Make sure it is 100% the best acai berry you can get.
